  1526 Bible   Product Information
William Tyndale believed the Bible should be available in the vernacular—the common people’s speech. He famously declared, “The boy that driveth the plough shall know more of the Scripture than [an educated man].” Though forbidden by the Church to translate the New Testament into English, Tyndale’s determination resulted in its finally being printed in Germany in 1526. Smuggled into England, the Tyndale New Testament was a monumental success. The simple, direct language of many of its verses has resonated down the centuries. William Tyndale’s legacy stems from his having translated the Scriptures in a way that made the most of the emerging English tongue. Bible collectors and anyone interested in the history of the English Bible will treasure this unique volume. • Co-publication with the renowned British Library • Facsimile of one of only two complete copies from Peter Schoeffer’s 1526 printing, held in the British Library’s collection • Features clear, legible type and original, color illustrations More Info

  1560 Geneva Bible   Product Information
Sixteenth century English Protestant scholars were determined to make the scriptures understandable to common people, so that, as William Tyndale famously put it, “the boy that driveth the plough should know more of the scriptures” than the educated man. However, Queen Mary’s (1553–1558) persecution of her Protestant subjects caused many to flee to the continent to avoid imprisonment or execution. Geneva, Switzerland soon became a center for Protestant biblical scholarship. It was there that a group of the movement’s leading lights gathered to undertake a fresh translation of the scriptures into English, beginning in 1556. Published in 1560, the Geneva Bible’s popularity kept it in print until 1644—long after the advent of the Authorized Version (a.k.a. King James Version). It was an English Bible that met the needs of both clergy and laity. Perhaps the Geneva Bible’s greatest contribution was its commentary, which under girded the emerging practice of sermonizing and helped foster scripture literacy. The Geneva Bible was the first to feature many innovations in the field of Bible publishing: • Text printed in readable roman type; 7 pt. type • Smyth sewn • Division of the text into numbered verses • Italic type used for words not in the original languages • Marks placed over the accented syllables to aid in pronouncing proper names • Extensive textual and explanatory commentary placed in the margins • Words/phrases displayed at the heads of pages to promote scripture memorization • Maps and woodcuts illustrating biblical scenes included • Sold in a variety of sizes so many people could afford a household Bible The Geneva Bible accompanied English settlers voyaging to the new world. It is probable that the Geneva Bible came to America in 1607 and was used in the Jamestown colony. Thirteen years later the Pilgrims brought it with them on the Mayflower’s perilous voyage to religious freedom. The Geneva Bible stands as a landmark in the history of English Bible translation. Hendrickson’s facsimile reproduces one of the finest existing copies of the 1560 Geneva Bible. Using quality materials and crafted to last, Bible collectors and anyone interested in the history of the English Bible will treasure this volume. More Info

  1611 Bible   Product Information
For nearly 400 years, the Authorized Version of the Bible—popularly known as the King James Version—has been beloved for its majestic phrasing and stately cadences. No other book has so profoundly influenced our language and our theology. Over time, however, the text has suffered subtle and occasionally troublesome alterations. This attractive edition preserves the original 1611 edition. Word for word and page for page, the text with its original marginal notes, preface (“The Translators to the Reader”), and other introductory material appear as they first did. The sole concession to modernity is a far more readable roman typeface set by nineteenth-century master printers. Elegantly bound with old-world quality craftsmanship, this is the perfect edition of the incomparable King James Version for study and for sheer enjoyment. “The Authorized or King James Version is the most influential English Bible in history. This facsimile is a word-for-word, letter-for-letter reproduction of the original 1611 edition, set in readable type and is a valuable and essential addition to every Bible library.” —John R. Kohlenberger III, author or co-editor of more than three dozen biblical reference books and study Bibles • The only word-for-word facsimile of the original 1611 Authorized Version on the market • Handsome page design with clearer modern type and decorative initials is convenient to read and reference • The text is complete with the Apocrypha, plus the original preface and translators’ notes. Alfred Pollard’s classic essay on pre-1611 English translations and the history of the Authorized Version is also included • Attractive binding in all editions—raised hubs, gilding, and one ribbon marker—creates an heirloom-quality volume More Info
